|Anyone up for Cruel Seas game? I want to try out the night action rules. On my reading of the history, at least in the English Channel, Norwegian & French waters actions, they almost all occurred at nigh or in fog or mist...
The significant factors to spot another vessel at nigh or in fog were:
Size of the target ship
Speed of the target ship
Speed & activity of the viewing ship
Crew quality of the viewing ship
According to Peter Scott's first hand account in "The Battle of the Narrow Seas" the best ambush tactic was for the MTB's to lie in wait stationary along the expected convoy route, and then to move off at slow speed when the target was detected - with the high performance engines of the MTB's, higher speeds generated significant noise. He also observed that the Fairmile torpedo boats were usually spotted (i.e. size M for Cruel Seas) whereas the smaller Vosper's were much harder to see.
